OpenAI Reportedly Working on X-Like Social Media Network Powered by Generative AI: Report

BREVITY: OpenAI, under CEO Sam Altman, is reportedly developing a new social media platform featuring a social feed centered around ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities. This project is an internal prototype and Sam Altman is privately seeking the feedback from outsiders.

On Tuesday the Verge reported that OpenAI is in progress to devise its own social media platform like x. This project could go one-on-one with Musk’s X (formerly twitter). According to the report, this project is said to have the integration of ChatGPT through which it is going to possess the social feed incorporated with capabilities of image generation. In simple words people can post stuff and a key part of that content is images generated by ChatGPT.

According to the report of the Verge, Sam Altman is confidentially seeking the feedback of outsiders about this new project which is still in its early internal prototype phase. However, it is not clear whether OpenAI is integrating the new platform into ChatGPT or launching it separately as a standalone application, the report said.

This project may intensify the rivalry between Altman and Musk especially following Musk’s previous bid to acquire OpenAI for $97.4 billion which was rejected by Sam Altman by responding “no thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.7 billion if you want.”

Elon musk sued the OpenAI, claiming they abandoned their original mission to create AI for the good of humanity and are now focused on corporate gains. Moreover musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in March for transitioning into a for profit-model.

OpenAI, in turn, sued musk back accusing him of harassment and trying to block its move to a for-profit model. OpenAI also claims Musk was the first to advocate for a for-profit model as long as he ran it, according to the internal emails released by OpenAI. However, their case will go to a jury trial next spring.

While the details are limited, but a social feed powered by generative AI puts OpenAI in direct competition with Elon Musk’s X and potentially with Meta. Meta is rumoured to be working on an AI assistant with social feed features to make his company leader in AI. The company intends to debut a Meta AI standalone app during the second quarter to be the front runner in AI race. Amid those rumours responding to media reports Sam Altman on X jokingly said, “Ok fine, maybe we’ll do a social app.” Now, it seems they might actually carry it out.

While it is not clear whether OpenAI will release the social media app but this development reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy to expand it’s ecosystem, enhance AI capabilities and remain competitive in this rapidly evolving tech landscape.
